Zach’s Ceremony feat. Zach Doomadgee

From a small concept conceived in 2008, and a full 10 years in the making, Zach’s Ceremony is a full feature documentary which has won numerous national and international accolades. The doco follows Zach Doomadgee’s path to his manhood ceremony, a powerful and important film about confronting challenges and the crossing of cultural boundaries.

A big portion of the doco was filmed in Sydney, and boxing features as a big component in Zach’s story. Zach and his father Will trained here at Joe’s Boxing, both attaining their Black Shirts, with Will going on to achieve great success as a boxer, a fantastic competitor who won titles fighting under the Joe’s Boxing banner.

The second half of the movie is filmed in and around Zach’s hometown of Doomadgee in far North Queensland. Although I’m yet to visit Doomadgee, we have donated plenty of boxing gear to the local community, and this is definitely a road trip in the making. So, if a 3000km road trip from Sydney through outback NSW and Queensland, with as much boxing kit as we can carry to donate to the locals, takes your fancy; then climb on board!
